Canadian Feed Grains

Our own estimate of domestic feed use by commodity: barley, wheat, durum, oats and Canadian and US corn, for Western Canada (MB, SK, AB, BC) and Eastern Canada (Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces). Built from the demand side, livestock numbers and slaughter times feeding rates, split across grains by price and availability, and compared with StatCan.

What changed from last year

How the estimate is built

Three steps: animals set how much grain energy is needed; price and availability split it across grains; corn is then split into Canadian-grown and US imports.

1. Animal numbers and slaughter set the grain energy needed

3. Corn: Canadian-grown or US imports
